8 Years Later

I have waited 8 years for tonight. After a heartbreaking election in 2000, this country has unquestionably gone down the wrong path. The Republicans have had 8 years and have completely jacked it up. It's time to let the Democrats try to fix it. Iraq, the economy, education, the environment, the national debt, Katrina, CEOs and market regulation...the government has failed us in these areas over the last 8 years. It's a big mess to walk into but I think Obama is up for it. Four years ago, I heard Obama's speech from the 2004 DNC. Oddly, because I had never heard of him at that point, my first thought was: "Hey, that guy should be president." Four years (and lots of research) later, I was mailing in my ballot voting for the guy for president. OK, actually, I didn't mail it in. Dan hand delivered our ballots because we live in a fairly Republican county and we didn't trust that it would get counted unless we took them in. Anyway, here's to Obama! Here's to the end of the war! Here's to a better education for our children! Here's to a better economy! Here's to renewable energy! Here's to health care for all! And here's to a future I am much happier sending Noah into! Good luck, Barack. I'll be praying for you!!!

Okay, I don't want to be a sore loser, but since I went out and voted I retain the right to complain. First of all I don't agree that the last 8 years have been down the wrong path. President Bush proved to be a very strong leader after 9/11 and did many things right in his first term. Katrina was not something that he could have prevented and although it could have been handled better by Bush, much of the blame for the loss of life, especially in New Orleans, lays in the hands of the Democratic Mayor, Ray Nagin. The economy was a problem created much before Bush's time and was more within the control of Congress then of him. The President is a member of the executive branch and does not make or pass laws. That power lies with congress. It was the congress and the proposals of a democratic president, Clinton, that encouraged mortgage companies to give high risk loans to people that had no steady way of paying them back. When those high risk loans went into foreclosure it threw everything into a tailspin. As far as CEOs go the democrats have had control of congress for 4 years and could have passed laws imposing limits on golden parachutes for CEOs, but they have not done it. They are as guilty if not more so than Bush for the way they have been allowed to run companies. Whether you agree with the original reason and war in Iraq is beside the point. Obama cannot enter office in January and just march the troops out of Iraq. It won't happen. The war is now being won and the country is stabilizing. We will continue to have troops in Iraq for years to come and will most likely have permanent strategic bases their forever. We fought and bled to free the country and to walk off and leave it to a potential mess before the job is finished would just assure that we would be back again for another bloody war when terrorists turn it into a safe haven. Also, since we have fought there and freed the people of Iraq from under the hands of a tyrant, we deserve to retain troops and bases there for our strategic reasons. We still have bases in Germany and Japan from WWII because they are useful to us and to the winners go the spoils. We did not shed American blood to turn and walk out. I have many friends in the military that have been or are in Iraq and they agree with me. As far as healthcare for all goes, how is he going to pay for that? He just voted for a 700 billion dollar bailout that rapidly increased the national debt to historic proportions. My old partner in investigatons was a canadian citizen from a socialized healthcare system and all he ever does is complain about how poor the healthcare was and how long it took to get things treated. He often says how much better the healthcare system is in America and how it encourages new research, treatments, and medicines that no other country in the world can support or discover because they do not have a healthcare system that encourages it. I think improvements can be made to the current system and we should strive to find a way to get healthcare for most, but the government should not be the big brother to take care of all.

I'm sure Obama may do seem good things and I hope he keeps his promise to be a moderate democrat and work with Republicans. If he does he may actually get two terms. If he shows his true colors as an extreme left liberal with socialistic tendencies then the nation could be in a huge mess four years from now, and the democrats will be out.

I hope President-Elect Obama will preserve protect and defend the constitution as the founding fathers envisoned it and leave the power to the states and to the individual.

You are seriously brainwashed.

no, i think you are.
we'll have to agree to disagree.

But the difference is this: a good part of what you wrote here isn't even factually accurate.

How so? I'm not certain there are many facts out there. Just opinions that differ between sides, and you have to decide which you believe. I tend to believe differently than you. I like some of what Obama said in the general election. He had to move center right to when and embrace some moderate ideas to get the independent vote. If he sticks to what he said in the general election he may turn into a great President. I just have my doubts. He has no record to back anything up and I think everyone can agree we are not sure what he will do. That was the consensus I have been hearing even from the members of the liberal media. We will just have to wait and see.

Whether I like it he is now my President and I respect the office, and the person in it regardless of our differences. I just hope it is a good thing.

that should be to win.

Eric:

1. What liberal media do you listen to???

2. Congress was not controlled by the dems for all of Bush's presidency.

3. The federal government should have been in New Orleans sooner.

4. Clinton was not the cause of our current economic crisis, although I will agree that he did not do enough to counter Reaganomics which is why we are in the mess we are in now. Trickle down clearly did not work.

5. The war in Iraq is NOT being won. There are no winners when that many people have died. The country is not stabilizing and I can post evidence of that, but it probably won't be until this weekend or next week because I have so much going on with work and class right now.

6. McCain voted for the same bailout and the debt was already at historic proportions because of Bush policies.

7. I have a few friends in Canada and I know all about their health care system, but that has nothing to do with Obama's health care proposals. Did you not listen to him at all? His are nothing like Canada.

8. I don't think there is much chance that I am the brainwashed one. I grew up with the same ideals that you did.

9. Are you ever going to learn that you and I just can't do the political thing??? :)

10. I love ya, dude, but you are never going to convince me, so what's the point?
